This page is dedicated to Chisinau or, to be exact, showing the way I see it. The best way to view is from bottom up, as the latest images are added at the top.
Last update: November 1, 2006.
October 2006. An ivy growing at the side of a residential block. Looks really nice while it still has leaves.
October 2006. The Day of Chisinau (annual event dedicated to the city - every locality has its own holiday of this sort). Not much to see in the streets, but this was very impressive. It is a carpet with characters from Moldovan fairy tales and children's books.
October 2006. This series of photos was taken during the National Wine Holiday, which takes place every year in early October. Basically, the whole event happens during two days - A Saturday and Sunday - in the central square in front of the Government residence, and wine producers set up exhibition booths and present their wines to the public. Some sort of parade and awards also take place, but I didn't see those. To my shame, this was the first time I attended this event, which was the fifth time it was organised.
September 2006. One of Chisinau's parks, called "La Izvor", meaning "At the spring" - there is a spring in a corner of the park, so I guess it gave the name to the whole place. Sorry for the green spot in the centre - I guess an insect made a transit stop right on the lens.
And this is a bridge in the park - it's not high, but looks really scary because of broken suspension rods
The following images were taken in May 2006 in Chisinau's Dendrarium - a place meant to be filled with various flora, but due to the lack of funding (the entrance fee is a mere 0.50 MDL) it is closer to a simple park in its appearance. The place also grows various flowers to be planted in the city's streets.
May 2006. This is one of my "favourite" (i.e. not) phenomena in Chisinau. Mud from the streets is thrown back onto the "lawns", from where parking cars and people drag it back with, respectively, wheels and feet. Again, view from my window.
May 2006. A brief hailstorm with a big downpour. Photographed from my balcony.
May 2006. Chisinau Police department established a mounted police division to patrol parks last year. These guys didn't want to be photographed, so I photographed them from behind.
Spring 2006. Local plumbers scavenging on the remains of a playground for metal pipes. Anything goes when you have a leak!
Spring 2006. A team of women cleaning up bushes beneath my windows. Note how muddy it is and the "uniforms" of the workers.
Winter 2006. A crow sitting on a wire outside my window. These creatures are giving me a hard time now (June), "singing" all day.
Winter 2006. Soldiers marching to or from the place where they worked clearing out excess snow. Soldiers are often involved in public assignments, including construction.
Winter 2006. Construction of a monument in the memory of Moldova's soldiers. As of June 2006, it is still under construction. The sign reads: "Construction of a memorial complex 'To the country's sons - eternal memory'".
May 09, 2006. Jumbo - one of the newest "shopping centres" of Chisinau (on the left), next to even newer living blocks. A ramp (one of its kind in Chisinau) leads to on-site parking - the only safe way to cross the street to get into the shops. Located in Botanica.
January 19, 2006. One of local traditions: clean carpets in fresh snow. Again, view from my window :)
January 7, 2006, "normal" weather is back, i.e. temperatures around 0C, all snow melts and freezes into icicles, also very rare for Chisinau, icicles on my balcony.
January 4, 2006, yesterday's first snow has been covered with a heavy layer of fresh snow, quite rare for Chisinau, the view from my window
January 3, 2006, the first serious snow this winter, as seen from my window
Late October 2005, views from my apartment's window:
Many old roofs in Chisinau provide a rich soil for grass, and sometimes even trees
The heart of the city - the new development neighbours the older one.
The Pushkin Museum - the house where Alexandr Pushkin lived during his exile to Bessarabia, and the wall in front of the museum.
In the park behind the Cathedral in the centre of Chisinau
A view of the lake in Valea Morilor (formerly the Komsomolets' Lake)
A panorama (15 images combined), as seen from the 16th floor of the National Hotel. Riscani and Ciocana are far away in the distance, behind the tall buildings in the foreground.
Here, three images were combined into a panorama. It shows the view of the far end of the Ciocana sector of Chisinau from outside the city. You can see a long row of 10-storey apartment blocks, behind which are yet more such blocks, plus schools and kindergardens and almost nothing else.
Most of the images below (the smallest ones) were taken for an older page. I apologise if they are too small, but I didn't have broadband back then, plus my webspace was very limited.
